Overview

Agrostemma is a graceful and long lasting cut flower that is typically grown for early season blooms. The velvety purple flowers are about 1-2″ wide with radiating lines on each of its five petals. They have tall, willowy gray-green stems that make them ideal for cutting gardens. Agrostemma creates an eye catching statement when grown en mass, which is very easily done by direct seeding in early spring.

We’ve found agrostemma to have a very good germination rate and self-seeds readily. It also attracts many pollinators, especially butterflies. We grew agrostemma by our front porch where we enjoyed watching butterflies hovering over the beautiful blossoms gently swaying in the breeze. We imagine the radiating lines on the petals to be runway marks that guide the insects to land on them.

Agrostemma is also commonly known as corn cockle because it used to grow wild among corn fields.

Agrostemma likes full sun. It is not frost-tender and is suitable for all soil types, but prefers well draining soil.

*Contains saponins, which is poisonous. Caution around pets and children. Where gloves and masks when processing seeds.

Sowing Instructions

Direct sow 1/8″ deep as soon as soil can be worked in early spring. Thin 6-9″ apart. If transplanting, sow indoors 4 weeks before last frost and set out once seedlings have at least two sets of true leaves.

My Notes RE Bartering:

We are interested in bartering for organic or homegrown/homespun yarn, or other homegrown natural fibers that we can use for natural dying. We would also barter for honey, perennial fruit, nut, medicinal seeds or plants we don't have on hand. Other offers will also be considered.

You may scroll down to the Product Enquiry form to inquire about bartering with them and possibly setting up arrangements for a trade. All barters are facilitated privately between the parties involved. Barter at your own risk.
