Overview

Besides being ornamental and attractive to pollinators, asters have medicinal values too. Aster (tataricus) has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. The root is used as an antibacterial and expectorant for treating bronchitis, tuberculosis, and other infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, Bacillus dysenteriae, B. typhi, Pseudomonas and Vibrio Proteus. The active components are triterpenes, triterpene saponins, and triterpene epifriedelinol. Aster has also been known to treat cancer, both in folk medicine and modern medicine (Plants for a Future).

Aster – Aster alpinus

Life cycle: Perennial / Ease of propagation: Difficult / Hardiness zone: 3-7

My father told me a very sad and beautiful story about my uncle in Vietnam. My uncle, who died when he was only 18 due to leukemia, was an aspiring poet. He wrote many poems about the Vietnam war and my dad remembered one poem in particular that was about the wild purple flowers growing on soldiers’ graves. To this day, my dad has been searching for wild asters to commemorate his brother.

When I heard this story, I also decided to look for wild asters, collect seeds and grow them to give to my dad. Luckily, we found a patch of them while harvesting wild raspberries up in the mountain where we live in Oregon.

Based on where we found asters, they like lots of sun and well-drained, sandy soil. They are not effected by deer or other browsers and can tolerate frost.

Sowing Instructions

Sow 1/8″ deep in flats indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. (Pre-chilling the seed for two weeks can improve germination rates). When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. You can also direct seed asters in the fall.
