Overview

Clary sage is an incredible plant with many edible, medicinal, and ornamental benefits, making it an essential herb in a permaculture homestead.

Clary Sage – Salvia sclarea

Life cycle: Biennial / Ease of propagation: Difficult / Hardiness zone: 5-9

Clary sage is an incredible plant with many edible, medicinal, and ornamental benefits, making it an essential herb in a permaculture homestead.

A member of the salvia family, it is valued for its aromatic qualities. Clary sage’s medicinal values include treating disorders of the stomach and kidneys as well as digestive problems such as wind and indigestion. It is also a calming herb that helps relieve period pain and pre-menstrual problems, as well as hot flushes associated with menopause. However, pregnant women should avoid using clary sage. Preparation of the herb is similar to other types of sage. Fresh or dried leaves & flowers can be eaten and used in tea just like culinary sage.

Clary sage’s flower bracts (which are the pink papery outer covering, whereas the actual flowers are blue/white) are very attractive and can be used for cut and dried arrangements.

Clary sage prefers sandy, well-drained soil in a sunny spot. As a biennial, clary sage will set seed the second year.

Sowing Instructions

Direct sow in early spring or fall sow in August/September and overwinter for more vigorous plants. Cover seeds lightly. Seeds can also be sown indoors 6 weeks before last frost and set out once the ground is warm and the plant reaches at least two sets of true leaves. Plant 24-30″ apart.

My Notes RE Bartering:

We are interested in bartering for organic or homegrown/homespun yarn, or other homegrown natural fibers that we can use for natural dying. We would also barter for honey, perennial fruit, nut, medicinal seeds or plants we don't have on hand. Other offers will also be considered.

You may scroll down to the Product Enquiry form to inquire about bartering with them and possibly setting up arrangements for a trade. All barters are facilitated privately between the parties involved. Barter at your own risk.
