“Solar Flare” Hand Dyed Tapestry
Only 1 left in stock
This is a large 33″ x 38″ raw silk cloth tapestry, hand dyed in a unique sunburst pattern. The center was created by natural dyeing with onion skins, steeped in the dye pot at different times and intervals to create rich shades of orange, reminiscent of the sun. The outer light aqua blue and sky blue circles were similarly achieved by dyeing with black hollyhock flowers.
Colors derived from plant-based dyes are one of kind, each one imbued with a natural, earth-tone hue. Plants can impart a wide range of colors from subdued pastels to rich, deep jewel tones. Black hollyhock creates blueish greens. Yellow onion skin creates a gorgeous marigold orange. Avocado pit makes the softest pink. It’s a joy to discover what each plant offers and I’m constantly exploring and experimenting with the wide spectrum of colors possible.
Aside from natural dyes, I use only the best quality materials and I try to source sustainable fibers. This tapestry is raw silk, which is unprocessed and unbleached. The fabric is very soft, but does not have the sheen often found in processed silk. It’s closer to a hemp fiber in feel. I chose silk because protein fibers (such as silk and wool) absorb and retain the colors of natural dyes much better than cellulose fibers (plant derived like cotton, hemp, linen). Kept indoor and out of direct sunlight, this fiber artwork will remain vibrant for a long time.

Why natural dyes?
Natural dye is sustainable and is less harmful for the environment and our bodies. Modern synthetic dyes which are in most of our textiles and clothes are made of toxic chemicals. Studies have show that mass produced synthetic dyes pollute our waterways, harm wildlife, and may be linked to cancer.
Your support of makers and artisans reduces our reliance on mass consumerism, the biggest culprit of most of our environmental problems including extreme climate changes. Your support also helps to bring back lost traditions and skills such as natural dyeing. As we recover these traditions, we become more in tune with nature and with our community.
