Overview

A smaller cousin of delphinium with a strong branching habit, larkspur is an annual flower with tall spires of flowers that range from brilliant blue to lilac, pale pink, and white. Larkspur is an excellent cut flower and dried flower. Larkspur dries exceptionally well, and from our experience, is one of the few blue colored flowers that retains color once dried. It will continuously produce blooms from early summer through late fall.

Larkspur has medicinal qualities, most notably the tincture of seed can be used as an insecticidal to kill lice. However, the whole plant is very poisonous and it should not be used internally (Plants for a Future).

Larkspur prefers a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Vernalization is needed to trigger flower development. As such, larkspur is a good candidate for fall planting and overwintering (they are not frost tender) or plant in very early spring. Direct sowing is best since larkspur has a long taproot and doesn’t like transplanting.

Our personal experience shows that larkspur is actually quite versatile. We seeded our larkspur in trays in late winter then transplanted outdoors in early spring and they all did well. They went to seed quickly when summer came, but still continued blooming all the way through late fall. We mulched heavily to keep the ground moist and cool.

Sowing Instructions

Direct sow seeds 1/4″ deep in early spring or fall. Darkness is required for germination. Alternatively, sow seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before last frost. Keep temperature at around 55°F (13°C) until ready to plant outside. Plant out after last frost at 4-6″ apart. Plants have tap roots and do not transplant readily.

My Notes RE Bartering:

We are interested in bartering for organic or homegrown/homespun yarn, or other homegrown natural fibers that we can use for natural dying. We would also barter for honey, perennial fruit, nut, medicinal seeds or plants we don't have on hand. Other offers will also be considered.

You may scroll down to the Product Enquiry form to inquire about bartering with them and possibly setting up arrangements for a trade. All barters are facilitated privately between the parties involved. Barter at your own risk.
