Overview

Sheep Sorrel’s leaves are sharply sour and add a fun note to salads, sandwiches or minced and garnishing rice or any other dish that could use some tang! It is a fun way to add more flavor to a dish. As a snack in the garden it can add some joy to your day as you check on all of your plants. We have enjoyed making sorrel pesto for our pasta when the basil is not in yet. Cooking the Sheep Sorrel leaves reduces the sour note quite noticeably and so larger quantities could be used when cooked. Or add some sorrel to your pan right at the end of cooking and wilt the leaves for a more softened sour note.

The entire above ground portion of the plant is edible: Leaves, stems, shoots and seeds. In addition the roots are astringent and can be used medicinally. Being in the buckwheat family the Sheep Sorrel seeds are nutritious and delicious. While Sheep Sorrel seeds are small they are produced quite vigorously and so if you have many plants you may be able to collect a significant amount for adding to your bread, crackers or other food.

Sheep Sorrel is a perennial and will go on living year after year in the same place once it is established. It will also reseed itself and there is a good chance you will find it coming up in new places in your garden. Sheep Sorrel also spreads by rhizomes and so you may take that into consideration when deciding where to plant it. Sheep Sorrel is well suited for a wide range of soil conditions.

Sheep Sorrel is used as a liver stimulant and helps the liver clean the blood. It is helpful in treating skin conditions and other problems caused by liver disorders. Sheep Sorrel is also a diuretic.

My Notes RE Bartering:

We are interested in bartering for organic or homegrown/homespun yarn, or other homegrown natural fibers that we can use for natural dying. We would also barter for honey, perennial fruit, nut, medicinal seeds or plants we don't have on hand. Other offers will also be considered.

You may scroll down to the Product Enquiry form to inquire about bartering with them and possibly setting up arrangements for a trade. All barters are facilitated privately between the parties involved. Barter at your own risk.
