Overview

Perennial sweet pea is the more robust cousin of garden sweet pea and though it’s not scented, we love its vibrant pink flowers and long vase life. As a legume, it is also a nitrogen fixer.

Sweet Pea – Lathyrus latifolius

Life cycle: Perennial / Ease of propagation: Difficult / Hardiness zone: 5-9

Perennial sweet pea is the more robust cousin of garden sweet pea and though it’s not scented, we love its vibrant pink flowers and long vase life. As a legume, it is also a nitrogen fixer.

If you’ve grown annual sweet peas, you would know that they are quite fussy – they like cold weather so their flowering period is limited to spring or fall, and they need a lot of trellising and support. Though the scent of annual sweet peas is heavenly, the blossoms are ephemeral, lasting only a few days in a vase. In contrast, perennial sweet pea tolerates heat and drought extremely well. They can sprawl or climb a fence without support. Flowers have long stems and also lasts longer, with a notable color transition from bright pink to lilac. So if you have a sentimental attachment to sweet peas perhaps from your grandmother’s garden but don’t like all the effort, perennial sweet pea is the answer!

The edibility of perennial sweet pea has been debated. Some sources say it’s poisonous and others say it’s like any other pea. Plants for a Future suggests cooking the plant well (pea pods, seeds, and leaves) before consuming.

Sowing Instructions

Direct sow 6 weeks before the last frost, 2-3 seeds 6″ apart, 1/4- 1/2″ deep. Darkness is required for germination. Thin to 6″ apart when true leaves appear.

Transplant: Pre-soak the seed for 24 hours in warm water and then sow 4-6 weeks before planting out. Transplant outside as soon as the soil can be worked. Sweet peas do not like transplanting and they have long tap roots. Use tall pots.

My Notes RE Bartering:

We are interested in bartering for organic or homegrown/homespun yarn, or other homegrown natural fibers that we can use for natural dying. We would also barter for honey, perennial fruit, nut, medicinal seeds or plants we don't have on hand. Other offers will also be considered.

You may scroll down to the Product Enquiry form to inquire about bartering with them and possibly setting up arrangements for a trade. All barters are facilitated privately between the parties involved. Barter at your own risk.
