Yarrow, Yellow – Achillea millefolium

Life cycle: Perennial / Ease of propagation: Easy / Hardiness zone: 6-9

This yellow yarrow is a hardy, drought-tolerant long-lasting perennial. We came across a small field of wild yellow yarrow while driving to find mullein and we couldn’t help but stop to harvest them as the seeds were perfectly ripe.

Yellow yarrow is not medicinal like white yarrow (see white yarrow for medicinal uses), but it has its own benefits which includes brilliant yellow flowers that are great for bouquets and for drying, and attracting beneficial insects. Yellow yarrow supports damsel bugs, lacewings, lady beetles, and parasitic wasps, which will help rid your garden of aphids, cutworms, slugs, mites and leaf hoppers. It’s a good reason to have this plant in your garden, especially inter-planted among food crops.

We found these yarrow growing to about 4 ft tall in an area that was hot and dry with poor soil that had little else growing, attesting to their resilience.
Yarrow would be an excellent choice for dry farming/xeriscaping since established plants are very drought tolerant. They’re also hardy to about -20°C.

Sowing Instructions

Sow in place ¼ inch deep in early spring. Germination takes 1-3 months. Or sow in pots/flats and keep soil moist until germination. Transplant outside in the summer.

My Notes RE Bartering:

We are interested in bartering for organic or homegrown/homespun yarn, or other homegrown natural fibers that we can use for natural dying. We would also barter for honey, perennial fruit, nut, medicinal seeds or plants we don't have on hand. Other offers will also be considered.

You may scroll down to the Product Enquiry form to inquire about bartering with them and possibly setting up arrangements for a trade. All barters are facilitated privately between the parties involved. Barter at your own risk.
