About

Hello everyone,

thank you for taking a look here.

After making about two thousand of them, I can say: I've perfected the act of sewing zipper pouches. I've fabricated pouch after pouch, streamlining my one-woman-factory until I got it all smoothed out.

It got slightly boring at this point, and I didn't have any other ambition greater than: keeping a steady revenue.

It felt a bit meaningless. Even though they were very pretty and well sewn pouches. There are already so many people who sell pouches in this world already full of  stuff. What do I add with these pouches, next to a nice lifestyle for myself? What makes them unique? I don't even have a great passion for sewing. I just like to sew a few hours a day.

Now I found a mission greater than myself: planting trees. We cut so many trees down and it relates to so many problems: poverty, land degradation, extinction, droughts, climate change. Really it's a long list. Partly I'm also to blame because I participate in this system which causes many of these things. So I try to fly less, I eat no animals, I have no car. These things would make a huge difference if more people would do that.

As Jane Goodall says:

You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of a difference you want to make.

I'm trying to be more considerate for mama nature, instead of only thinking about myself on the short term. That's why I came up with this voluntary tax for the tree planting organization Trees for The Future.

Every item purchased is 20 trees planted. I reserve two dollar on each purchased item and I transfer it to trees.org. The trees will be part of a Forest Garden, they will feed families, sequester carbon, revitalize land, enhance biodiversity. In short: they will provide stability, on the short term and for future generations. How great a gift is that for your children: a food forest full of abundance and stability?

In that way, twenty trees can impact lots of people, including those who come after us.

For more information you should take a look at their website.

How Its Made

Ingredients for the zipper pouch

  • fabrics (for the inside and for the outside)
  • YKK zipper
  • paracord
  • thread

Tools

  • sewing machine
  • serger
  • scissors

Fabrics

  • For the pouches I use new fabrics as well as thrifted/vintage/second handed
  • I've become known as the person 'who does something with fabric' which means people think of me when they throw out their jeans or old curtains or fabric collection. Which is great
  • The new fabrics I use probably aren't that sustainable. I buy them at the fabric market in Utrecht, the Netherlands, where I live. It's a Saturday morning market where vendors sell fabrics.

Future plans

  • Plant many more trees
  • Use fabric made of hemp
  • Design my own fabric prints
  • Learn how to draw/design/paint and utilize it to pimp up the pouches and give them even more soul
